For a while now I’ve been checking the Typical Culture (TC) website on a frequent basis because to me these guys are pure skateboarding. I’ve become a big fan of the site since I first heard about it. Plus they’re based out of SD so I get to see a lot of local talent but these guys get around. They’ve got contributors from all over and Im sure it will only continue to grow. Im not one to usually read interviews in skate magazines but I’ve read almost every article on TC. With posts featuring people like Lee Bender, Jimmy Cao, Trooman Hooker, Dave Swift, Rob Brink and so many others . . . any skateboarder will enjoy the content which is updated daily. TC delivers exactly what you wanna see; great photos, dope footy, the story behind the hard work, and even a little industry insight. TC recently took the time to post a few of my photos along with an interview of my friend Anthony Shebelski. TC’s zeal towards skateboarding is most apparent. Check it out, Shebelski rips and TC holds it down for all us skateboarders. Thanks TC!

I’ve recently moved back to San Diego and its been really good. Originally I moved away to try and “grow up.” Have I? Damn if I know because I’m still doing the same things I did before, skateboarding and shooting photos that is. I guess Im more focused because money and girls use to consume my every thought but right now I could careless about both. Family, friends, photography, and skateboarding is all I care about now a days and its nice. Maybe Im selfish . . . Maybe I’m suppose to find a girl, knock her up, and get a real job. No thanks, I’d rather do my own thing. The ladies can wait.

Over the past year Ive been shooting a lot in LA and it seems to be were the fresh things are happening. It’s true a lot goes down in the City of Angles but god damn there are tons of people out there. Commuting takes forever and your lucky if you see three good spots in a single day. I’m glad to start the new year back in SD where life moves at a pace that better fits my style. Back to talking about LA steeze, check out these two Skateboard Vandelz. Oscar and Alex make things happen and when they do it always looks too fresh. So its a no brainer why JSLV has their back. Meza, Valdez, and JSLV emanate with undeniable style. Just peep these pix of Alex and Oscar and you’ll see why they got the JSLV stamp of approval.

Skate Mafia maybe what you see on the Berrics rep’n 619 but BROKE is the crew keeping SD on the map for street cred.

BIRTH OF BROKE . . .
It was a hardware company first, David Bonwell, Sean Mynster and I thought of the idea in front of a 711 about 7 years ago

WHEN WAS THE FIRST PRODUCTION OF BROKE BOARDS, HOW MANY?
It was 50 boards and that was about 3 years ago

HOW MANY BROKE BOARDS HAVE BEEN MADE TO DATE, GRAPHICS & TOTAL COUNT
We have had 7 graphics and about 350 boards made

FAVORITE LOCAL PARKS & ROAD TRIPS
Probably Renette Park or Memorial. We go to San Francisco and Arizona about 4 times a year

ANY FUNNY BROKE STORIES YOU WANNA SHARE
There’s a lot of them . . . We got kicked out of a hotel in Arizona once from El Chris being stupid. It was right after a Chargers game, he had stolen an 18 pack and thought he was LT running through the hotel with it and got caught. And the best was when we gave a guy who just robbed a bank a ride home and didnt know until after when I saw that my car was on the news.

SHOUT ‘EM OUT . . . LIST THE CURRENT BROKE FAMILY
Jared Cheney, Steven Kashat, Stinky Mike, El Chris, Tanigi Valentine, Chris Gonzales, Johnny Nye, Connor Getzlaff / Skooter, Cory Evan Cox, Eric Handley, Felix Guerrero, D’on Harris, James Apodaca, James Washington, Joe Black, JuanCarlos, Richard Don, Brad Brink, Nick Munoz, Alex Mooney, Tyler Lee, Kory Penley, Oscar Mendez, Banger

Here is the latest in BROKE edits Bryan has put together teasing us for the upcoming BROKE III video brought to you by Mr Skandunas himself.

I know it may take a minute to load but this hand-tossed trickery is worth the wait to bake. Whenever I’m in SD I’m hitting these guys up cause they’re always down. I’ll be checking back with BROKE soon posting more photos and updated flicks so stay tuned. If you catch the Brunners at one of their favorite skate spots they’ll give you a new understanding of what the word “bonkers” truly means. Chris can destroy anything from tranny to big rails plus he seems to have an interest in the DIY spots. Pierce has the streets on lock but if you ever see him at the skate park he looks like a lil machine. Once I called them the Feabler Elves cause they can feable the biggest rails. Although I don’t think they were into it, I’ll think of something cool. There’s never any worries about running out of spots when you’re with these dudes. Each is like an individual skate spot encyclopedia and they don’t even drive. Name a spot and typically they know the nearest cross streets right off the top of their lil noggins. Chris & Pierce are pure skateboarders cause even if they’re in the parking lot each is having fun just rolling around. Put simply, these guys are awesome down to earth homies so its always a good time chilling. Here are just a few of the many photos we got from last Sunday while cruising around SD.

The modern world around us is filled with distractions. We invent everything, to keep ourselves occupied. People wander through life texting, scrolling and numbly listening to headphones…blocked & insulated away from other human beings. The more the population explodes exponentially, the further we become from each other.

Bruce Lee said, “If every person would help their neighbor, no person would be without help.” Hell! I barely know my neighbors….do you!? If they are anything like the rest of us, at the end of the day, the six pack gets opened, dinner is consumed, the world is locked away ‘out there’ and TV is the new god! Sometimes, for many, the only comfort is the sound of ice falling into a glass of J&B scotch.

However, I digress. Skateboarders are an exception to this. We are usually quite fond of each other. Sure, we may talk smack on others, but as a whole, we will cruise together & hype each other up in a session. Its as though we share a special secret no others can know of. We are the fortunate few. We are not armchair warriors. We live our lives ourselves and not vicariously through another.

Krishnamurti stated that, “…if you live your life through the opinion of another, all you will ever see in yourself is the opinion of others.” Convoluted? No! It makes perfect sense. Society wants us to toe-the-line; follow the rules. Society wants us to obtain a few letters after our names & gain respectability…then be a slave to money until we die. That is safety for society. As skateboarders, we walk to the beat of our own drummer & refuse to go the path others would have us take. We are the fortunate few.

Thnx to all my pool pals—Skate Long-Ozzie

Last weekend I got together with a few friends and we hit the local park. Its not always possible to drive around hunting down the best street spots each and every skate adventure. So its nice to kick back, save a little gas money, and have a good time at the park.

Mr. Cox compiled all this footy over the weekend and put together a quick edit for our viewing pleasures.

It was awesome to finally meet David Serrano. Go peep DVS’s Shopliftin’ Battle where David helped Platform Skate Shop take the title for best video. He is crazy talented on a skateboard so it was a bummer when he busted his foot at the first spot. He’s got a few other skills as you can see by how great the video above was shot. David also showed us a remote lil skate haven at his friends ranch were they have a bunch of ramps & boxes. It was definitely a good time and I cant wait to chill again.

For me this is my favorite skate event each year and this time I was lucky enough to cruise early with Chris (GonzGoneWild) and help the Vans crew set up. It was cool to watch everything come to life in the fake city of Paramount. It’s by far the most unique place I’ve ever seen a skate comp held, plus with the skate features being created by the skaters themselves it makes Vans DTSD one of the most creative out there. I enjoyed cruising around and meeting so many new friends. Its fun being caught up in the moment and watching everything that goes down. Catching everything through the lens is difficult so during the contest I really just kicked back and let the good times roll. How can you beat it . . . VANS made it snow it LA. Watch it on FuelTV™

I caught up with Oscar on Saturday at Paramount Studios in LA for the the Vans Downtown Showdown where we handled business and let the good times roll. Oscar stepped it up while skating alongside some of todays top pros and ams. Here are a couple images I capture and a few words from the man himself.

Walnut: VANS DOWNTOWN SHOWDOWN . . . WAS THAT YOUR FIRST TIME?

Oscar: I’ve actually gone each year its been going down. Downtown Showdown is a must for me, although this time was really amazing. Again I got to chill with a lot of homies that I don’t see that often. I meet a bunch of cool dudes while I was there so I had a blast mang! Thank Chris (Gonzales) for me again for coming through with the VIP passes.

Walnut: NO DOUBT, VANS DTSD IS MY FAVOREIT EVENT EACH YEAR. HOW DID IT COMPARE TO THE OTHERS YOU’VE BEEN TO AND DID YOU SKATE IN YEARS PAST?

Oscar: Once I got to cruise around a bit but not like this time. I got to skate as much as I wanted. Even though I wasn’t in the mix during the contest I still had a really good time cruising with everyone.

Walnut: HOW DID YOU LIKE ALL THE DIFFERENT SKATE FEATURES, WHICH WAS YOUR FAVORITE TO HIT?

Oscar: They were all pretty sick! Each was really different so that was cool. The Black Label 12 stair was my favorite for sure.

Walnut: WHICH OBSTACLE DID YOU ENJOY MOST WATCHING OTHERS SKATE?

Oscar: The FLIP pyramid ashtray! Just cause we had the best view ever, bird’s eye from the rooftop. So sick!

Walnut: WHO WERE SOME OF THE HOMIES YOU WERE SKATING WITH?

Oscar: Nick Merlino, Kevin Romar, Nick Tucks, Alex Valdez, Chaz Ortis, Ronnie Creager, and so many others . . . Everyone down there was really cool with me so I got to have a little sesh with all those dudes. It was unbelievable how chill everyone was. Thanks to all of them for that!

Walnut: WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF THE WHOLE EVENT?

Oscar: Chilling with a bunch of new homies and shredding with everyone that was there.

Walnut: GOT ANY OTHER SKATE HAPPENINGS POP’N SOON?

Oscar: Well the next big event I’m taking part in is Damn AM so that’s a must for me! If anything pops up before then I’ll keep everyone posted on an upcoming Meza Mania. Maybe even cruise down your way and hit some new spots this week, that would be dope! Until then I’ll be skating in the streets having a good one with the homies.

Today my friend Shane cruised over to the GonzWal Studio (aka two bedroom apt.) and showed me the new line up from Welcome Skateboards. At first glimpse you’ll be struck by how awesome these graphics are and left staring at all the cool colors. They give you a choice between your standard popsicle that comes in a variety of sizes and a custom Welcome Punk shape(8.5”). Did I mention the quality is top notch? If you dont believe me Shane and I went out and captured a few visuals to show you how great Welcome Skateboards truly are.

FIRST PRO YOU LOOKED UP TO

FIRST EVENT YOU ATTENDED (AND MAYBE YOUR THOUGHTS FROM THE EXPERIENCE)
The first was probably some random Ocean Beach comp or something, I’m not really sure. But my most memorable was the ASR tradeshow about 4 years back, when it still had a lot to do with skateboarding and its future. I was walking with 2 friends of mine, Jared(Cheney) and Bryan(Skandunas) along the free skate course on my way to sign up for a Tradeshow comp. I had just met Kareem(Cambell) for the first time and I’ll admit I was still a little starstruck from it as I was chattin it up with my homies. Then I crossed paths with another star of skateboarding Mr. Theotis Beasly. Upon catching each others eye immediately all I could say was, “Theotis, dude, wow man you rip man. I’m proud of you dawg for real. My name is-” and before I could say it he said it for me. He not only knew my first and last name but he had also said that he watches my part on “Vitalskate.com” (r.i.p) and was hyped on it.The only thing I could think of was how many times Ive watched his part in the “Baker Has A Deathwish” video. We shook hands and left it at, “I’ll see you soon friend.” That day, not to be cheesy, changed my life. To feel like I was actually recognized and respected by someone whom I had respected and admired myself. That day I learned 2 things: That no one is too small for respect and acknowledgement and that not everyone blessed with a little stardom has to be spoiled by it. Thanks Theotis.

I’ve known Chris for sometime now and he was the first real homie I met who was truly down for skateboarding 24/7. He has become one of my best friends and over the years I’ve come to know him as an adapter to any situation. We met sometime in ‘99 at the local skate shop where he worked, Hanger 94. Everyone knew him as a shredder so naturally we started skating and shooting pix together practicing different techniques with my 35mm family cam. Chris has always been able to find unique street spots and bring a creative view to the daily skate sesh.

So why do I see Gonz as a great adapter? If Chris ever feels a situation is wrong he quickly makes it right. Back in the day little Chris quit high school I’m sure not because he knew what he wanted to be but because he saw a different path. Growing up in El Cajon is chill although tough to get away from. As he adapted to the hustle & bustle of modern life he moved on to get a job at SoleTech selling the goods. Now we all know that money is the devil and dealing with it (especial sucks if it’s not yours) melts your soul so Chris found a way truer to himself. Gonz dropped the fake money and is currently a Visual Merchandiser for Vans where he only deals with the fun stuff, making sure Vans is pimped at your local shops and he does a damn good job. If you see him during any skate event he’s probably bbq’n gourmet hotdogs and making sure your stoked on waffle grip. He has a knowledgeable understanding of nature and is a great person to have around if your out in the wilderness. Say armageddon really happens someday soon, I bet there would be Gonz residue that survives and starts forming into some new species. He’s fuckin GonzGoneWild!

Now when we hang out things are no different. We still skate to have fun shooting pictures with our digital and film cameras. So this is why Gonz is an adapter, he makes things happen. I mean you’re here now peeping my blog and he made this.
